JACK DORSEY LAUNCHES BITCHAT, A WHATSAPP COMPETITOR THAT WORKS WITHOUT INTERNET OR PHONE NUMBERS.

Jakarta – The tech industry has once again been taken by surprise thanks to an innovative step from Jack Dorsey, founder of X (formerly Twitter), who has launched a new messaging platform called BitChat. Unlike popular apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, BitChat introduces a daring concept: it functions entirely without internet connectivity or phone numbers.

Dorsey introduced BitChat via his X account on the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2025, sharing a white paper that explains the app’s technical foundation. This move further highlights Dorsey’s dedication to creating a more decentralized communication and social media landscape, following his earlier venture, Bluesky.

What is BitChat?
BitChat is a messaging platform that operates on peer-to-peer mesh Bluetooth networks rather than the internet. This design makes it particularly valuable in areas where network signals are weak or entirely absent.

In contrast to WhatsApp, which relies on central servers and phone numbers for account creation, BitChat removes the need for servers, accounts, emails, or phone numbers. Communication happens directly between users through Bluetooth, providing greater privacy and user autonomy.

How BitChat Works: Bluetooth Mesh Network
BitChat makes use of mesh Bluetooth technology, where each connected device becomes a node that extends the network’s range. This means messages can hop from one device to another until they reach their target.

While Bluetooth typically covers around 10 meters, the mesh network can extend coverage significantly, potentially exceeding 300 meters, depending on the number of nearby devices and their proximity.

Security and Key Features
In addition to not needing the internet, BitChat strongly focuses on security. Messages are safeguarded with end-to-end encryption using Curve25519 and AES-GCM protocols, ensuring privacy and preventing interception.

Some of BitChat’s notable features include:

  • Local storage of messages (no central server involved)
  • Group chats
  • Mentions through usernames
  • Favorites to highlight important messages
  • Rooms and Password Rooms for private discussions

Is BitChat Publicly Available?
At present, BitChat is still undergoing beta testing and is accessible only on iOS via Apple’s TestFlight program, which has already hit its user limit of 10,000 participants.

Dorsey has not yet announced plans to launch BitChat on Android or other platforms. Yet, given the growing interest, a wider release seems likely.

A Lifeline in Emergency Situations
BitChat isn’t merely a substitute for WhatsApp; it can also act as a vital tool during crises, such as natural disasters or government-imposed internet shutdowns. Its ability to function offline makes communication possible when other networks are unavailable.

Conclusion
BitChat represents continued innovation in the realm of messaging. With its decentralized approach, robust encryption, and freedom from the internet and phone numbers, BitChat could mark the start of a new era in digital communication. Whether it can rival the likes of WhatsApp and Telegram remains to be seen, but its unique approach is undeniably noteworthy.
