Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the signing of 20-year-old Japanese defender Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale, marking a significant addition to the club’s backline under newly appointed manager Thomas Frank. Takai becomes the second player to join Spurs during the summer transfer window and the first new arrival under Frank’s leadership.
The young centre-back, who has already earned four senior caps for Japan, has signed a five-year contract with the North London side. Reports indicate that the transfer fee is in the region of £5 million ($6.8 million), a modest investment for a player who was named the J.League’s Best Young Player in 2024. Standing tall and comfortable playing on the right of a central defensive partnership, Takai is expected to step directly into Spurs’ senior squad for the upcoming campaign.
Speaking about his move, Takai reportedly expressed excitement about the opportunity, saying, “It’s a dream to play in the Premier League. I’m ready to give everything for this team and grow with this new challenge.”
His arrival follows Tottenham’s earlier move to secure Mathys Tel on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich. The young forward impressed during a six-month loan last season, which prompted Spurs to negotiate a reduced transfer fee—cutting the price from £50 million ($68.1 million) to £30 million ($40.8 million).
Takai also joins a reshaped defensive unit that includes Kevin Danso, who has now fulfilled his previous obligation to join the club permanently. Additionally, the long-awaited arrival of Croatian teenager Luka Vušković has come to fruition. The highly rated 18-year-old, who had been on loan at Belgian side Westerlo, made headlines for his seven-goal haul last season—a remarkable figure for a centre-back.
Tottenham’s transfer activity isn’t expected to end here. The club is actively exploring further attacking reinforcements and remains keen on securing high-profile targets such as Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus. Both players are seen as ideal fits for Frank’s dynamic and progressive style of play.
Meanwhile, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked with Spurs in recent months. However, the Cameroon international has expressed a strong desire to join Manchester United this summer. As a result, Thomas Frank, who previously managed Mbeumo at Brentford, is not believed to be pursuing a reunion.
Tottenham’s early moves in the transfer window signal a clear intent to refresh and rebuild the squad as they enter a new era under Frank. With young talent like Takai arriving and further signings in the pipeline, Spurs fans have reason to be optimistic about what lies ahead.
