FC Barcelona have officially confirmed the acquisition of Joan Garcia from RCD Espanyol after triggering his €25 million release clause.
The 24-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has signed a six-year contract with the La Liga champions, which will run until the end of June 2031.
“FC Barcelona has activated the termination clause of player Joan Garcia. The cost of the clause was €25 million plus CPI,” stated the club in an official announcement.
The contract will be signed this Friday during a private ceremony at the club's offices, formalizing his stay through the summer of 2031.
Garcia, who returned from vacation earlier in the week, publicly announced his departure from Espanyol just hours before Barcelona confirmed the move.
Recognized as one of the standout goalkeepers in La Liga last season, Garcia played a key role in keeping Espanyol out of relegation with a series of outstanding performances.
Due to his high level of play and relatively low release clause, Barcelona moved swiftly to reach terms with the player and finalize the transfer.
This deal marks the Catalan club’s first signing of the summer, with Garcia making a direct move from their local rivals.
Barcelona completed the payment of his release clause to La Liga through the player’s representatives on Friday. However, official confirmation had to wait until all administrative steps were completed and approved by the league.
Garcia is expected to eventually become the team's new first-choice goalkeeper, potentially succeeding Marc-André ter Stegen, whose future at the club remains uncertain.
