Despite Nyesom Wike’s ongoing infrastructure efforts in Abuja, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), believes that former minister Nasir El-Rufai had a more impactful tenure as FCT Minister.
Kingibe argued that many of Wike’s projects have not translated into real benefits for the average residents of the capital, suggesting that the minister may be disconnected from the actual needs of the people.
Speaking during a political programme on Tuesday, Kingibe emphasized that good performance as FCT Minister goes beyond constructing infrastructure.
She expressed disagreement with those commending Wike’s record, stating, “The minister’s projects don’t put food on the table for the residents of the FCT.”
“If you ask any FCT person who has been the minister who has performed the most in the FCT, they will tell you El-Rufai. Why? El-Rufai built roads, he also responded to the needs of the people,” she said.
Kingibe continued, “El-Rufai was also the sort of minister when the people have a major problem, he did not take the senator to common people like me to say, Oh, the place you have moved the abattoir to, there’s no infrastructure. They cannot go there. There’s no security, there’s no water, there’s no this. So being a successful minister isn’t just about infrastructure.”
She stressed the importance of a minister being in touch with the people to identify shortcomings and take corrective action.
Responding swiftly, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to Wike, criticized the senator, asserting that his principal would not be sidetracked by what he described as political games.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Olayinka advised Kingibe to focus on the welfare of her legislative aides, claiming many had reportedly left their roles due to six months of unpaid salaries and entitlements.
